I delivered more than 20 trustee briefing sessions in the last year, ranging from 2 hours to all day. My briefing is around the framework of charity regulation and best practise. How to keep it simple and minimise risk, so forth. Over time I have found myself increasingly addressing the really important issues. When things go sour in a charity as in any organisation it's not usually because it's badly run, or out of cash; it's because relationships have got difficult. I analysed 12 issues of a key charity governance publication, and more than 80% of it was devoted to how to avoid failures in relationships to damage the work.

The answer is to get the structures right, but work hardest on relationships. I have a number of visits booked into my diary, more than half of them are to try to restore fractured relationships which are putting organisations at risk. I'm accumulating some interesting material to help me, more later
